Inspired in high school by a love of drawing and math and a fascination with color, Kayla Garbrecht sought out a college degree that would allow her to combine all three. She found the Interior Design program at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, WI, and in her freshman year added a second degree in Interior Design: Kitchen and Bath. She also earned her AKBD certification and was the first student president of Fox Valley’s NKBA Student Chapter before entering the workforce full-time in spring 2017. “I love the problem solving, space planning, and critical thinking involved with this field,” she says.
After four-and-a-half years working as a design engineer at a high-end remodeling firm and as a kitchen and bath designer for the cabinet and lumber dealer, Kayla took the leap and founded her own business, Watertown, WI-based Broken Arrow Cabinetry & Design LLC, where she is Lead Designer. “I wanted to be a supplier of not only cabinetry, countertops and related construction materials, but also a design firm that would provide architectural design with high-end elements at an affordable budget,” Kayla says. “With a unique eye for design, I offer designs that are hand-crafted and personalized for each client and each project.” For 2022, her first full year in business, she projects the company will do $500,000 in sales.
“I love the transformations…it’s truly rewarding to see a space that a client hated transformed into something that is the envy of Pinteresters and fits their lifestyle and dream home.”
Kayla, who describes herself as “ambitious,” is thrilled by the response to her work—“I love the transformations…it’s truly rewarding to see a space that a client hated transformed into something that is the envy of Pinteresters and fits their lifestyle and dream home,” she says—but she’s also proud of her ability to respond to the needs of her community. This past spring, Broken Arrow was able to make a $1,000 donation to the Central Wisconsin Community Action Council, which distributes donated and purchased groceries to food-insecure families.
The other half of Kayla’s life revolves around her husband, Brady, their two-year-old son, Harlow, and the family’s German Shepard, Moose. She has also recently invested considerable time and energy into remodeling her own kitchen. “It’s truly a wild ride to be both the client and the designer,” she says. “While I dreamed about our new kitchen since we moved into this home, it was still hard knowing all the choices that are on the market. We are 98 percent done now except some minor details and I am in love with the result. It’s a project that I get to see the results of every day!”
