Scott Holcombe’s résumé reads like a pitch for a reality series: He got his start in 2016 as an apprentice at Long Island-based Five Star Kitchens — a three-decade-old renovation business owned by his father-in-law — where he took on projects other designers didn’t want. Now, he’s Designer & Business Development Manager. Then, in April 2020, he launched web-based Holcombe Design Co., working side-by-side with his wife, Chelsea, who also gave birth to the couple’s second daughter in October. Juggling family and business is now old hat for this young designer. “Over the past few years, we’ve found that consistent honest communication is the key to maintaining a positive business relationship,” Scott says. “Most of the time, we try not to talk business when we’re together as a family, and I think that is helpful for us and our wives.”

“I love sitting face-to-face with clients, visiting their homes and seeing an ugly, dysfunctional space turn into a beautiful, functional kitchen for their family.”

Scott created Holcombe Design Co. after seeing an opportunity to provide clients all over the country with high-quality kitchen design through a virtual online experience. And while he’s excited about its potential for growth, his hands-on work with Five Star Kitchens offers a necessary balance. “I love sitting face-to-face with clients, visiting their homes and seeing an ugly, dysfunctional space turn into a beautiful, functional kitchen for their family,” says Scott, who describes himself as an “achiever” and plans to complete CKBD certification in early 2021.

His proudest achievement, however, is his “little growing family,” which includes Chelsea, baby Nora and 22-month-old Ava. “No accomplishment is more important to me than these girls!” says Scott, who is also a dog dad to a mini-goldendoodle named Sperry. His other passions include golf (he played competitively in high school), coffee (he tries to stop at any local coffee shop he can find), craft beer (especially stouts and IPAs) and faith (he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Religion). “I love reading, learning and teaching truths that I believe can change the lives of others,” he says.
