Everyone will remember 2020 as the year that upended all norms — but Chloe Baker didn’t let that derail her entry into the design industry. She started as an interior designer and project manager at Kre8 Developments Inc. in February, working part-time through the pandemic until she received her diploma in Kitchen and Bath Design from Calgary’s Bow Valley College, an NKBA Affiliated School, in June. Now, this newcomer works to create spaces with her clients during the design phase and then oversees project management as well. “This allows me to be incredibly hands-on,” she says. “Nothing makes me happier than going from our first concept to the final result.”

Helping clients make choices that “feel like who they are,” is Chloe’s favorite aspect of her job. “The fun truly happens for me with picking the tile and hardware,” she says. But she’s also passionate about green technologies and recycled products and loves that more companies are striving to meet environmental accreditations and let consumers know they are making such choices. “Green living is the direction our generation is headed, and for me to be educated and excited with all that’s coming out is what will set me apart from others,” she says.

A self-described “people pleaser,” Chloe originally wanted to be a nurse — until age 18, when she was working in a flooring store and realized her true calling was design. Perhaps her “Moroccan-themed” bedroom done in a deep teal with vibrant red, orange and yellow patterned fabrics, a faux-crystal chandelier and a canopy bed was an earlier clue? Her other passions are field hockey (she’s a team captain and certified umpire) and watching her rescue pup Finley sing along to her husband’s guitar playing. She also dreams of visiting Africa and exploring her Dutch heritage in the Netherlands, but adds, “The biggest must-do for me is to be happy, no matter what I’m doing. I just wish to be happy, always!”
