Thirty Under 30: Matt Pulliam
Meet Matt Pulliam, one of the outstanding young professionals of NKBA’s Thirty Under 30 Class of 2021, in this exclusive series.
By Donna Heiderstadt
Matt Pulliam has always been fascinated by stone. He collected rocks and minerals as a child and, after earning a Finance degree from the University of Georgia in 2015, joined the family business, AGCO Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of high-tech surfacing materials that include cultured marble, solid surface, natural stone, quartz and porcelain. “The uniqueness seen from stone to stone even out of the same quarry is incredible,” he says. “I like to say paintings are art for your walls and natural stone is art for your counters.”

Currently the company’s Director of Operations, Matt spearheaded the streamlining of its manufacturing process, reducing lead times on cultured marble by three to five days and increasing throughput by 34%. He describes himself as “observant” and says his favorite task is problem-solving as he works with a wide range of materials, including many new high-tech surfaces. “These new materials allow for stone to be used in ways not feasible just a few years ago,” he explains. Matt also serves on the board of the International Cast Polymer Association — he is the third generation of his family in the business, and his grandfather was a board member of the parent organization — where he helped create the Safe Plant program in partnership with OSHA to promote safety to ICPA members.
Matt’s passion for the outdoors and physical activity fuel his favorite leisure pursuits. He recently took up golf, he says, to “get back into competitive sports.” He and his girlfriend Mallory also have two dogs (Tristan, a Poma-poo, and Riley a Dobra-dor), a tabby cat named Blue and a 50-gallon tank full of fish. They enjoy vacationing on the beach in Destin, Fla., and plan to travel further afield — although a road trip through Utah and neighboring states earlier this spring was scuttled by the pandemic. No stone stays unturned for long in Matt’s life, so he and Mallory are destined to see those magnificent rock formations one day soon.
