What do puzzles and photo shoots have in common? Becky Leu loves them both. As the owner of West Des Moines, Iowa-based Leu Interiors, Becky not only enjoys the challenge of actual puzzles but also the concept as it applies to kitchen and bath design. “Much like a puzzle, you’re given individual pieces/constraints/clues/tidbits that aren’t necessarily significant on their own, but they come together to create something beautiful and successful in the end,” she says. “I’m fueled by the complexity of how every detail of a K&B design needs to be considered simultaneously so that each piece will fit together perfectly.” And photo shoots? “[Those] days get me stoked to start the process all over again with another space!”

Becky, who graduated from Iowa State University with a BFA in Interior Design and founded Leu Interiors in 2016, has worked with hundreds of clients. But her first project remains most memorable. “It wasn’t a huge job by any means, but I’ll always remember how I felt when I saw the space completed exactly how I intended, and it was even more wonderful in person than in my mind,” she recalls. “It was the moment I realized ‘I can do this,’ and after risking everything to start a business, it was incredibly reassuring and empowering.” Her subsequent work has been featured in design publications, she’s been a guest lecturer at her alma mater and, in addition to NKBA, she’s also a member of the Des Moines Home Builders Association, the Remodelers Council and Professional Women in Building.

“I’m fueled by the complexity of how every detail of a K&B design needs to be considered simultaneously so that each piece will fit together perfectly.”

The daughter of a master carpenter, Becky has nurtured a life-long passion for home construction and design, which played out in her childhood bedroom. “I rearranged it several times each year, and the change of scenery always made me feel renewed and invigorated,” she says. Today, her design preferences favor neutrals, natural textures and antique motifs.

Becky’s other passions are music (her first love, she says) and creating the perfect home (she’s currently in the middle of a main-level remodel) for herself, her husband, Aaron, and their two Miniature Australian Shepherds, Toby and Lulu. Looking ahead, she aspires to continue traveling the world — a favorite memory is climbing Yellow Mountain (Huangshan Mountain) while studying abroad in China — and “singing karaoke in every country I visit.”
