We recently announced the winners of the first ever 2017 NKBA Tiny Home Challenge: Student Edition at an awards ceremony held January 10 at the KBISNeXT Stage in Orlando. Three students were recognized for their creative design solutions which maximized the space of a tiny home floor plan. Entrants to the nationwide competition had to create a tiny home kitchen design based on the specific needs of a young California family wanting to downsize from their current 4,000 square-foot home.
San Diego homeowners Harry and Olivia and their 4-year-old son Gray asked applicants to create a bohemian themed kitchen complimented with modern touches and aesthetic design.
A panel of four industry professionals evaluated entries based on the creative execution of such client requirements as minimum window sizes, amount of seating, laundry facilities, inclusion of a living wall or herb garden, and the use of a repurposed item within the tiny home.
According to judge Jennifer Bertrand, the competition is important because, “tiny homes are popular as it’s a creative solution to living in high-cost areas.” In addition to Bertrand, the judging panel included Karl Champley, AKBD; Peter Salerno, CMKBD; and Richard Anuszkiewicz.
Elizabeth Trench of Century College in White Bear Lake, Minn. won first place in the competition and took home a MacBook Pro laptop computer.
Tiffany Murphy of Front Range Community College in Fort Collins, Colo. took second place for her tiny home proposal and was presented with an iPad Air 2 tablet.
Betsy Walstrom, also of Century College, was awarded $250 and third place for her entry.
