First up, on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 8 to 10 a.m. (Pacific Time), Kathryn Grube, MID, NCIDQ, LEED AP ID+C, will present “Color and the Senses: Exploring Synesthesia + Current Color Trends.” Grube, an IACC internationally accredited color designer, will explore how color affects taste and smell and how seeing a color may evoke any number of other sensations. For instance, green may evoke of the smell of grass, while lemon yellow might suggest a sour taste.
She will share an understanding and appreciation of how color influences the five senses through a phenomenon called “Synesthesia,” and also discuss color trends for 2019, showing how they are derived, selected, and applied to various products and materials in the current world of design Attendees will discover how the body works through an interactive experience with color and the senses; learn to demonstrate how color unites and impacts the senses, from how we react to color in three ways: being innate, learned or from cultural learning, and participate in an interactive experience to see how color is perceived based on sensory response.
Following this course, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Jamie Briesemeister, sales and marketing director for Integration Controls, a smart home automation company, will uncover why home technology is an important part of the design process in “Embracing Smart Technology in Your Kitchen & Bath Designs.” Smart-home systems are superb multitaskers that are meant to offer convenience, more free time and peace of mind to the user. These days, it’s possible to automate and control just about anything electronic in a home from a smartphone — lights, shades, audio/video equipment, thermostats, ceiling fans, garage-door openers and more! Homeowners are using technology at an increasing rate in their daily lives — so why would it be an afterthought in design?
Briesemeister will share what designers and remodelers can do to embrace technology in the kitchen and bath. Attendees will learn how to identify products and solutions that add value to the home and improve the client’s quality of life; express how smart-home technology fits in the kitchen and bath environment, and gain confidence to discuss home technology with clients and recommending solutions.
On Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 8 to 10 a.m. (Pacific Time), interior designer and lighting specialist Karyn Judd Reilly, CKD, NCIDQ, will discuss “The Practical Application of Lighting Design for Kitchens and Baths.” She’ll cover understanding the concepts of lighting and offer tips to create practical lighting designs for clients. Reilly’s presentation will focus on real-life application, allowing designers to create reflected ceiling plans that communicate selections with installers and electricians. She’ll discuss basics of electrical systems, and designers will also have the opportunity to bring their own client projects for lighting design assistance. Ultimately, the goal is to help designers improve their confidence level when selling lighting concepts to clients.
Finally, On Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., author, consultant and industry veteran John Morgan will present “GenSales 5: Keys to Your Five-Year Generational Sales Success.” Epic advances in knowledge, technology and logistics are changing the flow of products and services to consumers at rates never before experienced … and this change is supercharged by the precipitous shift of generational influence and purchasing power.
Morgan, founder of Morgan Pinnacle, a manufacturers’ rep agency specializing in the kitchen and bath space, will help attendees understand the evolution in generational behavior, Baby Boomer to Millennial, in research, inspiration, procurement and completion of products and services in the design/build market. He’ll discuss consumers, the market, trends, identifying future revenue channels, market capabilities and the systems and services needed to have in place to build three-to-five-year business strategies.
