Lightovation, the Dallas International Lighting Show held June 20 to 23 at the Dallas Market Center, will feature four speakers familiar to many KBIS attendees.
Patricia Davis Brown, CKBD, owner of her namesake design company and an NKBA board member; Karyn Judd Reilly, CKD, NCIDQ, designer and educator, Lights My Soul; Tammy Mackay, AKBD, interior designer at Design Eye, and Doug Walter, owner of Doug Walter Architects — all past Voices from the Industry speakers at KBIS — will present lighting seminars specific to kitchen, bath or interior design applications.
The one-hour sessions take place on Thursday, June 21, in the new SMART Center, a 6,000-square-foot education and activity center that will be inaugurated at the Lightovation show.
First up, at 9 a.m., is Reilly, whose topic is “Advanced Lighting for Kitchens & Baths.” In this mid-level course, she’ll cover the next steps beyond the basics for a more thorough understanding of lighting concepts, terminology, object reflectance and its importance, comprehension of photometric data provided by lighting manufacturers, as well as lighting calculations that include aging-in-place adjustments.
At 11 a.m., Walter will present “Rewriting the Rules on Kitchen Lighting,” detailing how to remedy a poorly lit kitchen with the right fixtures and the ideal placement of those fixtures.
In her 2 p.m. seminar, “Designing Lighting Aesthetics for the Kitchen and Bathroom,” Brown will discuss designing lighting that hits the space correctly to avoid shadows and bright scallops on the face of cabinetry; why a layered lighting design is important in these rooms and how to achieve one; choosing the right lamp for the right effect; how LED lighting affects the colors of the materials in the room, and choosing the correct color temperature.
At 4 p.m., Mackay will cover “How to Elevate your Designs with Thoughtful Lighting,” illustrating how to apply different types of lighting and technologies to improve the aesthetics of interior spaces.
Additionally, attendees are invited to join Jon Schallert, president of The Schallert Group, for his opening keynote address on June 20, at 10 a.m., entitled, “The New Rules for Business Success: Capturing Today’s Consumers as a Destination Business.”
With an emphasis on practical and affordable strategies, Schallert will explain how to make any business a consumer magnet, how to identify, target and attract profitable customers and get them to love your showroom or store within the first seven seconds after entering. He’ll also discuss building loyalty while maintaining profit margins — even as competitors offer discounts — and other tips for boosting business.
The 3 p.m. keynote is “Social Media Tools Proven to Drive Store Traffic,” presented by Leslie Carothers, CEO of The Kaleidoscope Partnership and cofounder of the Savour Partnership. She will offer results-driven methods that maximize the effectiveness of each social platform to increase traffic and sales, and explain where to focus social media and digital efforts to achieve business goals. Learn her top tips for maximizing the effectiveness of Facebook video ads to draw more foot traffic to your store, how to use Pinterest and blogs to attract more visitors to your website, optimize your SEO standing in mobile search results and more.
DMC, a hub of international lighting resources to the trade, hosts thousands of lighting buyers and designers twice a year, in January and June, showcasing innovations in products, trends and systems for residential and commercial projects. The expo takes place in about 1 million square feet of space on two floors of the Dallas Trade Mart building, with about 150 exhibitors in permanent showrooms.
The SMART Center — an acronym for where Showrooms, Manufacturers And Reps Thrive — is powered by DMC and the American Lighting Association and will be located in Trade Mart 4826. It includes a seminar suite, lounge space, and reception area that will be open to all registered attendees, exhibitors and guests throughout the show. “To offer our customers a dedicated suite featuring unmatched comfort, customer service, inspiration and knowledge is a key benefit for everyone attending the show,” said Cindy Morris, president and CEO of DMC.
