What You Will Learn

When working with clients, there are ways to make the cabinet selection process a little easier. In this session, we’ll explore the various types of cabinets on the market today, their similarities, differences, uses and installation. We’ll also discuss the nitty gritty about what makes each of these cabinets unique.

During the cabinetry installation, what could be more important than keeping the lines of communication open with the installer/contractor and the client? We’ll discuss what is needed on the job site, how to keep the job moving through the project management process and setting expectations with the use of field drawings.

During this session you will:

  • Explore the various types of cabinetries on the market today including working with custom vs. semi-custom or stock cabinetry.
  • Identify the various cabinet moldings, fillers, overlays, and extended stiles and how to use them effectively.
  • Discuss how to prepare the undercabinet, above cabinet and in cabinet lighting for the cabinetry project.
  • Discover tips and tricks for cabinets and installation – what can be done to ensure a successful installation.
  • Define and explore cabinet trends in today’s market.

elizaBeth Marcocci, CMKBD, CAPS – Designer/Project Manager -Mother Hubbard’s Custom Cabinetry

elizaBeth is a CMKBD (Certified Master Kitchen & Bath Designer) and CAPS (Certified Aging in place specialist). She is a designer & project manager for Mother Hubbard’s Custom Cabinetry in Mechanicsburg PA and has been in the design industry for over 35 years.

She started in the field as a residential interior designer before focusing her skills on kitchen and bath design in 2000. She has worked with homeowners, builders, and architects on various types of projects ranging from residential to light commercial for both new builds as well as renovations. She holds a degree in interior design from St. Petersburg College and Florida State University with further studies through NKBA University.

elizaBeth Has been recognized by winning Best Small Kitchen, Best Moderately Priced Kitchen, Best Large Kitchen, Best Kitchen – Before & After, Best Large Bathroom and Best of Show in Susquehanna Style Magazine for the NKBA Susquehanna Valley Chapter Design Competition.

She also served many years on the local NKBA chapter’s board of directors as Chapter Rep, Chapter President, VP Membership and Co- Chair of October K & B month.

In 2021 she implemented a Level up Study group for the chapter and writes articles for the chapter website. She was a Best of KBIS 2022 judge and presented a Voices From the Industry program at KBIS 2022 “Go SMALL or Go HOME”.

Karen Hockley, CMKBD, CAPS – Owner – Kitchens by Karen, LLC

As a KBDN Innovator Award winner in 2021, Karen Hockley, CMKBD, CAPS often hears from young designers that they would like to be able to download her knowledge of the kitchen and bath industry. With her writing, blogging and courses, her goal is to do just that. Hockley is the moderator of three Facebook kitchen and bath design groups, where her goal is to help designers reach whatever pinnacle they can to achieve their dreams.

In recent years, she has spent time creating material, writing, and blogging. Presenting weekly courses, including courses on ergonomics in Kitchen Design, Cabinet Basics, Kitchen Ventilation, Creating Kitchen Design Presentations, and Installation Drawings using Google Slides, Canva and PowerPoint, Closet Design, Countertop Materials, Selling Skills for Kitchen Designers, and How to Measure and Design for Refrigerators to make sure they fit. She is continually creating new material and courses.

There are so many pitfalls for new designers, Hockley notes, adding that designers today need mentors more than ever to guide them and give them a firm grasp of kitchen design and construction. Hockley recounts that she gained her knowledge of the kitchen and bath industry by going to every in-person NKBA course available. She took classes from industry icon Ellen Cheever, as well. Many of the companies she worked for had extensive knowledge-based training for cabinetry, countertops, faucets, and bath products, and she absorbed it all.

Nikki Martin, CKBD – Project Design Assistant – Signature Custom Cabinetry

Nikki joined the Sales & Marketing Department at Signature Custom Cabinetry, Inc. in 2019. Her role there includes order writing, training, product development, and design. Before moving to Signature, Nikki spent over 15 years as a kitchen and bath designer and project manager for a full-service remodeling company. She designed all decorative and mechanical aspects of her projects while overseeing in-house installers who performed all segments of the remodel. Nikki is a CKBD (Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer).
