ESTHETIC ACTIVISM
Recycling her company’s own goods Eileen Fischer buys back old clothes from clients and reinvents them into a collage of scraps. This act twice gifts the world with beauty, first as a garment and then as an artwork. This is aesthetic activism where recycling as a philosophy is made manifest. Welcome to the future where the circular economy is as beautiful as it is wise.
UNEXPECTED MATERIALS
I have a soft spot for designers who use unexpected materials with atelier quality finesse. Sérgio Matos delivers the goods. Twisting, and wrapping twined materials is a folk art in his native Brazil. Matos has elevated this craft in his enchanting creations.
I also love that I learned about him, not from the US press, but from friends in Brazil who were excited about his US debut at ICFF in New York City this year.
