One man’s trash is another’s…hot water? That’s what a new appliance, the HERU — or Home Energy Resources Unit — is promising to do. The washing machine-sized gadget is filled with waste, which then goes through an eight-hour cycle to convert it into hot water. Though currently in prototype stage, the English-designed product is set to launch within the next two years.

Architects and designers trekked to the far corners of the world for the Leaders of Design Council’s annual conference.
