Throughout the year, the 2017 NKBA K+B Insiders will travel to various tradeshows around the world to spot the latest and greatest in kitchen and bath design. First up, the Insiders attended the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) 2017 in Orlando, where they met with more than 40 journalists to reveal the NKBA 2017 design trends. Below, the Insiders share their predictions on what trends will be hot in the year to come.

One trend we will see more of in 2017 is the personalization of finishes and materials specific to K+B design. In 2016, we saw the rise of technology to improve function with sleek kitchens that transform to meet different uses, as well as products to create spa-like bathrooms at home. In 2017, I think technological developments will shift toward improving aesthetics to meet the growing demand for customization.

Another big trend for 2017 will be the use of growing stations in the kitchen. As people gain more knowledge on the importance of sustainability, tools will be developed to help match the demand. Sustainability will be key in the design of the future.

In 2017, I’m excited to see a continued use of fireclay sinks. Clay adds a naturally soft element in design, as well as the ability to create new, sculptural shapes that offer new visual stories. It also plays into the continued concept of naturally organic environments and spaces that utilize mixed materials. Just when you thought you’d seen it all, you will be inspired yet again to challenge your element mixing abilities.

My second trend prediction for the New Year is colorful tile. After a year of seeing white and muted tones play such a strong role around the country, I predict we are going to see more vibrant options.  I also think new lines and edges will be created to give designers an added layer of movement in backsplash design, flooring, and more. It will be another reason to cause your contractor to say, “You want to do what?” One of my favorite things is to constantly push boundaries in design.

In 2017, I predict a shift towards more organized and modern spaces—minimal design that enables homeowners to live more efficiently and focus on the important things in life. Modern design has been very popular in Australia for the past 30 years, as us Aussies love to push the envelope and showcase our love for the great outdoors. The open kitchen design that modern spaces often have encourages more interaction with family and friends and allows us to keep an eye on the children, watch television, cook, and more. Ultimately, the trend will promote a more focused lifestyle.
