The integration of modern technology into the world has become the norm. So how does this technology impact a non-mechanical design such as a kitchen or bathroom?
According to NKBA Tech Advisor Shelly Palmer, safety and accessibility are the two things most easily controlled in a physical environment. It is relatively easy to create a safe space, but becomes more complicated when electronics are thrown into the mix.
The more a designer needs to wire a space, the more safety and accessibility becomes a concern, especially with the trend of incorporating more electronics into the home. In fact, the 2017 NKBA Kitchen & Bath Design Trends Report finds that survey respondents are increasing their use of technology in the kitchen (e.g., more internet-connected appliances and docking stations), as well as planning for future tech integration.
Consequently, Palmer asks, “How do we guarantee that modern technology systems will be fail safe?” He suggests that apps and software can alleviate some of this worry, but above all, kitchen and bath businesses should plan for these risks at the beginning of their design strategy.
Palmer goes on to explain that in a world of technology, nothing is bullet proof. He asserts that, “Things break, and the more complex they are, the more likely they are to break.”
