The NKBA Reveals 2016 Design Competition Winners

Over 30 outstanding kitchen and bath professionals honored at the Design Competition and Industry Awards Ceremony held during KBIS 2016

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (JANUARY 29, 2016) — The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) recently announced the winners of the 2016 NKBA Design Competition at the Design Competition and Industry Awards ceremony held January 18 at the Marquee Nightclub in Las Vegas. The awards event, held prior to the opening day of the 2016 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS®), opened its doors to nearly 400 industry professionals. Over thirty individuals earned top honors across six main kitchen and bathcategories and eight specialty categories.

“The NKBA Design Competition offers a unique opportunity for our members to demonstrate their design abilities and stand out in the industry.” said NKBA CEO Bill Darcy. “With an emphasis on innovative concepts and creative expression, this competition communicates the value of professional design to consumers and the industry at large.”

Lori Carroll from Lori Carroll & Associates, Tuscon, AZ, won the Best Kitchen award for her stunning large kitchen design. In addition to this award, she was also named the winner in multiple areas including the Powder Room category (First and Third Place) and the Large Bath category (Third Place). A big winner for the night, Lori took home a total of $15,000 in cash prizes.

Best Kitchen

For her Best Kitchen design, Lori incorporated clean, crisp lines and a mixture of materials and finishes that punctuate her clients’ sense of polish and style. She created an open layout with plenty of room for food prep, cooking, clean-up, and loads of storage. In order to portray the homeowners’ outgoing personalities, Lori included light and airy materials, adding a touch of luminosity and sparkle.

Tanya L. Woods, AKBD, from XSTYLES, Bloomfield Hills, MI, won $10,000 for securing the Best Bath award. Tanya emphasized on the clients’ spirituality and love for the color purple in her design. This large bath is contemporary and linear, but is softened by the sensuous floral curves and arced shower wall. The bath, in all its serenity and calm, creates a sense of togetherness.

Best Bathroom

For the 2016 NKBA Design Competition, a panel of six, certified industry experts evaluated nearly 400 entries from across the United States and Canada. All participating projects were scored on various criteria, including safety and ergonomics, elements and principles of design, design planning, creativity, and presentation. Each judge was either a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer (CMKBD) or both a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) and a Certified Bath Designer (CBD).

The 2016 NKBA Design Competition judging panel included Peter J. Albanese, CKD, CBD, Charles R. Beckham, CMKBD, Patricia Davis Brown, CKD, CBD, ASID, NCIDQ, Licensed Interior Designer, Leslie Holland, CKD, CBD,  John Torelli, CMKBD, and  Adel Visser, CKD, CBD, CID.
