Innovation, customization and usability will be important in kitchen design during next two to three years, according to NKBA’s recently released 2024 Kitchen Trends report. In fact, designers report that usability is the top goal for every category except countertops and flooring.  From remote-controlled ovens to modified cabinets, here are five customized kitchen solutions.

Well-Curated Lighting

In addition to incorporating natural light in the kitchen, designers are using multiple layers of lighting for different functions: decorative statement lighting for showcasing design elements, ambient lighting for creating different moods, and nighttime lighting for aesthetics and safety. In addition, many are adding in programmable control options, voice activation, motion sensing and light sensing to fit individual schedules and lifestyles.

Ovens With Personalized Settings

Going forward, kitchens will feature appliances that can be controlled via apps and feature  customizable settings. Ovens that support delayed starts and temperature control precision, for example, will become increasingly popular. As will those appliances that can be controlled through voice commands.

Customizable Sinks

Specialized sinks designed as workstations will continue to be in demand, making prep, cooking and cleanup in the kitchen easier. Different colors and materials are also being used to give sinks a more unique look/feel, making them standout from the ubiquitous white or stainless steel options.

Individualized Tech and Storage Solutions

Pantries, islands and cabinets will have personalized storage and tech solutions such as integrated outlets and customized organization modules. These storage areas will be larger to contain clutter, giving kitchens a more minimalistic, streamlined look.  Bigger pantries will store food and small appliances as well as feature beverage stations. Larger Islands will include appliance drawers, charging areas and storage areas, while floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and cabinets with charging solutions, partitions and drawer dividers will be popular.
