5 Lighting Solutions for the Modern Bath

November 29, 2023

From natural light to presets and LEDs, these trends will only continue to grow in popularity during the next two to three years.

Lighting will serve a variety of functions in the bath in the next few years, according to NKBA’s 2024 Bath Trends Report. From designs with larger windows for natural light to LEDs for sustainability and customizable presets for individual preferences, here are the five most popular lighting solutions to expect.

1.  Natural Light

Homeowners are adding windows, skylights and/or doors for more natural light to turn the bath into a relaxing oasis. Larger windows are bringing nature into the bath and doors that open onto a deck, garden or private area offer additional space to unwind.

2. LED Lighting

As part of the shift toward sustainability, 100 percent LED lighting will become the standard in the bath. In addition to being better for the environment, LEDs help homeowners save on energy costs — and are easier to maintain, as the lifespan can be four to 10 times longer than that of traditional lighting.

3. Practical Lighting

Also popular will be practical solutions such as task lighting for various functional needs, lighting in medicine cabinets and mirrors and floor/path lighting installed for safety as well as aesthetics. This coincides with the rise of integrated, personalized technology. Photo: Jon Mancuso.

4. Decorative, Statement and Ambience Lighting

Decorative, statement and accent lighting will increasingly show up in the guise of recessed lights and sconces. In addition, customizable presets for mood lighting that varies by time of day will enhance the minimalist design and add to the spa-like feeling.

5. Lighting Controls

Increasing in popularity are lighting controls that allow the homeowner to manage the ambiance remotely. App-controlled lighting, locally placed dimmers and switchers, as well as programmable settings and motion-sensor lighting will continue to gain traction.
