During the KBISNeXT Stage panel “Work It: New Business Models, New Revenue Opportunities,” moderated by LuAnn Nigara, Author, Speaker and Podcast Host, design experts discussed how they discovered new ventures and provided insight. Panelists included:
- Breegan Jane, Designer, Entrepreneur and HGTV Personality.
- Claire Jefford, Owner of Claire Jefford, Inc.
- Jenna Gaidusek, Founder of eDesign Tribe Inc. and Jenna Gaidusek Designs.
Here are some of the key takeaways:
Gain Flexibility
With digital here to stay it’s a great time to have an online business, be it your main or extra source of income. This is an opportunity to have a flexible schedule while creating new ways to attract clients.
“I spend time on the road, and I can do this from my hotel room,” Jane said. “If I went through the onboarding process of finding a client I wouldn’t interact with as many people as I can through The Expert.”
Know Your Worth
As with in-person design businesses, charging the proper rate is integral to its success. This varies with each business, but it’s important to not sell yourself short. Digital business does not mean less work and must be taken into consideration.
“I charge more because my time is worth it, and I’m not making more on products,” Gaidusek said regarding her fee structure.
Set Boundaries
Virtual work often makes the lines blur between time spent working and not. Setting boundaries early on in the process helps with business practices, preventing burnout and determining whether or not you can take on clients.
“Set expectations with clients from the get go,” Gaidusek said. “Know that e-design is still the same amount of work.”
Build a Foundation
Know your “why,” and establish your business around it. Having systems in place sets up for success, and it ensures a seamless digital experience. Jefford discussed the importance of this and how it is another facet of consulting.
Finding support to fill in gaps is another factor that will help a new business. Being an expert in everything is not possible, but hiring the right people is.
“I hired somebody to help me with the parts that feel uncomfortable to me,” Jane said. “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there.”
