The Meaning of Color

Color is the reaction that light is having to an object or within a space, without light there is no color. The type and amount of light affects the perception of color. Color is a part of our daily lives and is a form of non-verbal communication that defines our environment and evokes emotion. It can hold a distinctive meaning, attract attention, change the apparent size of an object, symbolize a time of season and stimulate or influence a feeling or behavior.

The Color Discipline

The discipline of color crosses the lines of study within physics, art, math and psychology. Color in the architecture, design and building industry, which is our focus, can convey symbolic messages, aiding orientation, contributes to order, indicates function, and allows us to understand and interpret the environment.

Color Professionals

The primary professionals offering or performing these services in the kitchen and bath industry may include, Certified Color Consultants, Colorists, Interior Designers, Interior Design assistants and interns, Kitchen and Bath Designers, Architects, Landscape Architects, Painters, Decorators, Stagers, Realtors, Occupational therapists, paint suppliers, paint salespeople and paint representatives.

The Big Picture

Color encompasses more than just paint selection. Color is in everything specified in the kitchen and bath industry. This includes all materials; flooring, cabinets, countertops, tile, metal finishes, furnishings, art and decor and much more.

  • Learning Objective 5: The badge holder will possess knowledge of the color design process.

The information found within this reading will focus on the selection, use and application of color in the residential architectural industry. There will be instances where the terminology of color may be used interchangeably within all designed environments or living environments.
