This year, NKBA West Michigan proudly presented its second Student Design Competition Awards, celebrating its ongoing partnership with Kendall College of Art and Design and Western Michigan University. Throughout the year, chapter members, designers, and vendor representatives enthusiastically collaborate with professors to provide students with inspiring lunch-and-learn sessions, valuable industry experiences, and the capstone design contest.

Students were challenged to transform an empty loft into a family gathering space that supports autonomy and independence. They considered international influences, drawing inspiration from cultures around the globe. Nearly 40 entries were submitted and judged in two rounds by vendor representatives, local design leaders, and board members, with a final review by Kirshman Design Studio.

First Place

Savannah Fletcher – Western Michigan University

The judges were impressed with Savannah’s incorporation of Middle Eastern and South Asian cultural influences. The spacious kitchenette offered ample storage and thoughtful details. The living area is inviting with carefully selected finishes and architectural features.

Second Place

Harper Williams – Western Michigan University

Harper combined Scandinavian simplicity and Moroccan warmth to create a welcoming, balanced interior. She incorporated a well-designed work triangle in the small kitchenette and provided a variety of seating options. The judges appreciated her reinterpretation of the space, including a raised ceiling and additional windows that enhanced both natural light and flow.

Third Place

Inafethsel Aker – Kendall College of Art and Design

Inafethsel designed an upscale kitchen featuring customized booth seating. Her thoughtful drop zone helps keep the space organized, while a separate entertainment area offers a retreat for family connection.

Honorable Mentions

These students’ projects conveyed the homeowners’ personalities and love of travel through thoughtful design elements, color palettes, and unique custom touches.

Zoe Payton – Kendall College of Art and Design
Zoe created a Moroccan-inspired space with rich colors and integrated appliances. The design was well-developed and full of personality.

Joselynn Lasch – Grand Rapids Community College
Joselynn created a balanced, welcoming space. She vaulted the ceiling, added skylights to increase natural light, and incorporated architectural beams.

Eliana Hart – Kendall College of Art and Design
Eliana thoroughly researched global influences and tailored the space for entertaining guests, incorporating a fireplace, built-in coffee station, 24-inch refrigerator, and workstation sink.

Allie Lewis – Kendall College of Art and Design
Allie used built-in appliances to create a practical, understated kitchenette. She offered creative furniture solutions and abundant seating for the family.
