By Diana Mosher— This year’s summer social dazzled us on July 25 with an exciting circus theme spanning all levels of Samsung 837’s immersive experience center in the Meatpacking District. The “Greatest Summer Social on Earth” was organized jointly by the New York Design Coalition, comprised of the NKBA Manhattan Chapter, ASID NY Metro, IFDA NY, IDS NYC, and DLFNY. The Summer Social brought together members of all five associations for an evening of fun and networking.

Refreshing cocktails, delicious treats, including cotton candy and popcorn, and circus dancers made it a summer social to remember! There was also a special operatic performance by tenor David Santiago, who is also the President of IFDA NY Chapter. David loves music as much as design, and in 2021, he made his company debut with Teatro Grattacielo in New York City.

The Summer Social was preceded by NKBA’s second annual Design + Tech Summit—one of several events planned this year to mark NKBA’s 60th year anniversary. The Summit featured tours of Samsung 837’s connected living products and insightful panel discussions in the Samsung presentation theater featuring NKBA Manhattan members and sponsors, as well as lunch.

Past President of NKBA Manhattan Chapter Toni Sabatino, of Toni Sabatino Style, talked about her evolution with smart home technology in “Secrets to Success,” moderated by NKBA’s Suzie Williford. Toni shared about the early struggles, challenges, and solutions that led to her becoming a tech unicorn.

Toni also moderated “All Together Now” with NKBA Manhattan member Sharon L. Sherman, CKD, of Thyme & Place Design; Katye Bennett of KMB Communications; and Ed Gilmore of Gilmore’s Sound Advice. This session focused on today’s high-performance home and creating tech/design partnerships that successfully navigate budget, timeline, and client communication.

Greg Barrett, Director of Product Marketing, Lighting and Shades, for Savant Systems, NKBA Manhattan Gold Sponsor, was a panelist on “Designers Walk into the Light,” moderated by Tony Monteleone, Group Publisher, Dealerscope, CE Week and Connected Design. Home technology today must blend into spaces while being super easy to operate. That’s the ultimate luxury. Tech must be heard and experienced—but not seen.
