Learn about this week’s featured Student Design Competition winner. By Loren Kessell

The NKBA Student Design Competition gives student members the opportunity to flex their creative muscles and create spaces that are both beautiful and functional. The 2020-2021 competition, sponsored by Fisher & Paykel, featured the challenge of blending cultures in an Upstate New York cottage for a fictional couple named Owen and Deepa. Each week we’ll highlight one of the winners.

Shannon Larsen, an Arapahoe Community College student, re-designed the former library into a functional and luxurious bathroom for the clients on the main level of the home. The space needed to accommodate the entire family’s needs.

To add luxury, the space includes deep inky blue cabinetry and millwork, vertical wainscoting and grasscloth wallpaper. Both vanity areas showcase palmetto leaf wallpaper that provides visual texture and is a nod to Deepa’s love for plants. Cambria quartz countertops with subtle veining contrast the rustic touches.

Other notable features include:

  • Two compartments: one including a lavatory and powder room, and another with an additional lavatory, a vanity and a large shower.
  • Specifically designed to be fully wheelchair accessible.
  • A 32-inch wide linen closet accessed in the hallway.
  • An integrated hand shower system and 15-inch deep built-in shower bench.

Submissions for the 2021-2022 Student Design Competition are open, and students must submit their projects here by Monday, June 6.
