Learn about this week’s featured Student Design Competition winner. By Loren Kessell
The NKBA Student Design Competition gives student members the opportunity to flex their creative muscles and create spaces that are both beautiful and functional. The 2020-2021 competition, sponsored by Fisher & Paykel, featured the challenge of blending cultures in an Upstate New York cottage for a fictional couple named Owen and Deepa. Each week we’ll highlight one of the winners.
Darya Oswald, a Century College student, re-designed the kitchen to be a welcoming space for the entire family that minimizes environmental impact. The result was a bohemian space that is safe and establishes independence for their daughter.

The existing wall between the kitchen and dining room was removed to create one large open space with two seating areas, an island and an additional lounge. Interior walls were widened to accommodate an indoor herb garden for year-round access to fresh ingredients making farm-to-table meal preparation more accessible.
Other notable features include:
- A well-lit cleanup area that faces the garden and includes a built-in compost container.
- A cook station with a six-burner gas range and double ovens that accommodate cooking large holiday meals.
- A bake station with marble countertops, a filtered water bottle filler and a blast chiller.
- Stained hickory cabinets, natural wood floors and ceilings made out of reclaimed wood.
Submissions for the 2021-2022 Student Design Competition are open, and students must submit their projects here by Monday, June 6.
