With the ever-widening gap in skilled trades, it’s never been more important to bring awareness to the fruitful careers available in the design and construction industry. The NKBA Columbia River Chapter is addressing the issue by hosting its “Next Gen: Pathways in the Industry Event” to showcase unique career options and different paths to success.

“We’re really excited to share some insights and hopefully inspire the attendees to look at the kitchen and bath industry in a new light,” Courtney Glidden, AKBD, Columbia River’s programs chair, said. “There is a connotation that sometimes roles other than ‘Lead Designer’ can be pushed to the wayside and not given full exposure to students and new industry professionals. In school, those shiny titles are held on a platform, and if you don’t fit the mold for that role, it can be difficult to feel confident and inspired as you enter the workforce.”

Some of the chapter officers are also involved with outside organizations to advocate for the trades. Molly N. Switzer, AKBD, chapter president, for instance, works closely with the non-profit organization Girls Build, based in Portland, Oregon. They inspire curiosity and confidence in girls through the world of building with after-school programming, summer camps and classes.

“We want to show how fun and exciting it can be to sell tile, to work on a job site and have the opportunity to get your hands dirty,” said Glidden, “or help source materials and product to ensure a client project truly shines once all the moving parts and pieces are together.”

The “Next Gen: Pathways in the Industry Event” takes place on Thursday, March 5, at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific Time), at the CFM in Tigard, Oregon. It will feature a panel of five experts, including an independent designer, design-build company designer, a showroom sales rep, an independent sales rep and a general contractor, who will discuss career development paths.
