Industry experts name some of the hottest finish trends. By Loren Kessell

Finishes live up to their namesake and establish cohesiveness in a space. They add personality to integral appliances and fixtures.

Creating a finish is a rigorous process that involves extensive research and studying current trends to forecast what could be successful. Following research is engineering and testing, and then getting the final product out to the market.

The NKBA spoke to five companies to find out what the biggest finish trends are. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Matte Black

This finish continues to remain popular, and it provides a sleek, timeless look. Black is a no-fuss color option that brings sophistication to a space.

“Our matte black stainless steel is a trending finish for our kitchen appliances,” David Shulman, vice president of LG-One US, said. “It brings about an understated elegance to all kitchens, and it combines the timeless sophistication of stainless steel with a luxe, matte finish that complements any kitchen decor.”

Homeowners lean toward matte black finishes since it goes well with most of their desired design selections.

“Homeowners continue to give in to the dark side by incorporating dark finishes into their homes,” Danielle Radic, Moen product manager, added. “Moen’s on-trend Matte Black finish, available on a selection of kitchen and bath fixtures, offers a contemporary look that complements a variety of décor choices, while providing consumers with a unique finish that makes a statement.”

2. Stainless Steel

This classic finish remains popular among consumers, and a design twist can be added. Sub-Zero Group Inc. finds that people are drawn to pops of color incorporated into stainless steel appliances.

“Design flexibility is a huge focus for Sub-Zero Group, and we make it a high priority to ensure homeowners have plenty of options that fit the style and design they’re looking for,” Jeff Sweet, Sub-Zero Group’s corporate manager for product marketing, said. “We continuously monitor trends and engage with homeowners, as well as designers, to determine which features and styles are in demand and will continue to do so as it relates to color.”

3. Warm Metallics and Ombré

“Warm metallics continue to grow in popularity in the home-scape,” Erin Lilly, Kohler Co.’s design studio and decorative products manager, said. “Shades of copper, brass and bronze are prevalent in hardware, cookware, flatware and appliance and fixtures finishes.”

Kohler also recently launched its Vibrant Ombré finish, which combines two of its metal finishes.

“The idea of incorporating ombré, French for ‘shadow’ or ‘shade,’ into the kitchen and bath design came about as a unique way to amplify an everyday object, adding a subtle decorative effect to minimalist designs without disturbing the modern aesthetic,” Lilly said.

4. Vibration-Brushed Metals

“There’s a trend away from the typical ‘brushed’ finish we are so used to seeing on stainless steel,” Rebecca Alvord, principal designer for Monogram, said. “Vibration-brushed metals and low-gloss metallics are trending because they communicate a raw, authentic material.”
